A recent study by Ottawa based market research firm, Harris/Decima demonstrates the effects of design to the bottom line and the value of graphic design professionals.
Harris/Decima together with the Society of Graphic Designers of Canada (GDC) brought decision makers and business leaders together to better understand the industry’s perception of graphic design.
The study revealed what many of us in the industry already know that there is a definite link between design and better business performance. The study also showed that graphic designers and design firms who abide by a professional code of ethics, as certified graphic designers adhere to, instilled greater confidence in their clients.
Larger companies are more likely to hire a professional design firm to assist them with their marketing efforts as they are less likely to go to market with a campaign that does not have the research and expertise of a design firm. The respondents to this survey said that if faced with a choice between a certified and non-certified graphic designer of equal abilities, that 70% would choose the certified graphic designer. Some of the reasons behind this decision were based on reliability, trustworthiness, experience, level of professionalism and a code of ethics followed by these graphic designers and the design firms they work for. Choosing any service that affects the image of your own business should rely on these same principals.
In an article from Bloomberg Businessweek, entitled; The Value of Design, Helen Walters lists companies such as Apple, Procter & Gamble and BMW as corporate leaders that clearly understand the worth of design professionals.
The marketing firm you deal with should be able to communicate to you the code of ethics it upholds, and in Canada the Registered Graphic Designers of Ontario (RGD) is the only association with accreditation legislation and its members adhere to a strict code of conduct. So ask yourself, if the firm you are currently using isn’t comprised of designated RGD members, or does not follow a code of ethics, why wouldn’t they?
